This week, I watched the Form and Function lecture by Susanna Edwards which encouraged me to explore hands-on processes beyond screen-based work. The talk emphasized how unpredictability can lead to creative growth and the importance of emotional connection in design. I also considered how storytelling shapes audience engagement and carries social responsibility.
Despite breaking my foot, I managed to film at my chosen location, though it was challenging. Relying on someone to drive me and using crutches made capturing steady shots difficult. I couldn’t set up a tripod, and my footage was shakier than planned. However, I found that the natural movement added to the nostalgic, home-movie aesthetic. After stabilizing clips in After Effects, I embraced the imperfections rather than over-polishing them.
I also focused on colour grading, drawing inspiration from Little Miss Sunshine and Lady Bird to create a warm, sentimental look. I spent time refining the audio, layering music, interviews, and natural sounds like waves and seagulls to create an immersive atmosphere. Though balancing these elements was challenging, the final result felt intimate and reflective.
Overall, this week reinforced the idea that limitations can lead to creative solutions. Embracing imperfections helped me achieve a more personal, authentic outcome.
