Trainspotting :Title Sequence.

The typography in Trainspotting is bold, reinforcing the film’s raw aesthetic. Taking my lecturer’s advice to choose fonts that embody qualities like empathy, authenticity, and subtlety, I will research typefaces with histories that align with these traits. For example, a clean sans-serif could convey subtlety and introversion. I will ensure that my typography not only complements my illustrations but also contributes cohesively to the overall narrative.

The film employs a gritty, realistic visual style, often using handheld shots to enhance its raw energy. To achieve a more graphic aesthetic in my animation, I plan to focus on high-contrast imagery and a carefully curated colour palette. Minimalist designs with strategic use of colour can be strikingly effective, and this is the direction I aim to explore.

Considering my lecturer’s advice to avoid anything overly busy, I will concentrate on vector-based graphics. This approach will enhance a more cohesive look, allowing greater control over the visual narrative while maintaining consistency in the graphic elements.

Saul Bass: The Art Of The Title Sequence.

Saul Bass was a pioneering graphic designer, known for his film title sequences with his minimalist and symbolic designs. His work often featured bold typography, abstract imagery, and a striking use of colour to convey the essence of a film.

Bass employed simple geometric shapes and abstract forms to represent complex themes. Taking this as inspiration I could Incorporate clean lines and basic shapes to symbolize core concepts in my animation, ensuring clarity and focus. He also utilized striking, often hand-crafted typography to create a strong visual impact.

I want to Select typefaces that reflect the mood of my project, considering custom lettering to enhance uniqueness. I'm also thinking about possibly printing my own type to go on my animation like Bass often does.

Using simple shape and colour, I would like to create some imagery that conveys my list, creating a visual story. Bass uses Visuals also that encapsulated the film's themes or narratives. Some great examples to look back on later are, "The Man with the Golden Arm", "Vertigo" and "Anatomy of a Murder".
