For my NeuroRoutes project, I am beginning to research symbols or patterns that could represent dyslexia. This research will inform the design of practical items such as lanyards and keychains—functional objects and emblematic of neurodiversity. I am particularly interested in creating a symbol that represents dyslexia in a subtle, non-obvious way. The goal is to avoid stereotypical or overly medicalised imagery and instead develop a design that is aesthetically appealing, inclusive, and resonant with people with dyslexia.
As a starting point, I looked into the design process behind the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard. This scheme is widely recognised in the UK and internationally as a discreet way for people with invisible disabilities to indicate they may need extra support or understanding in public spaces, particularly in transport and retail environments.
On their website, the designers explain that the sunflower was chosen for its universally positive associations; sunflowers are bright, welcoming, and suggest growth and visibility. The repeated sunflower pattern is instantly recognisable yet neutral enough to be worn without stigma. Using a pattern (as opposed to a bold symbol or label) also ensures the design is approachable and discreet. I want to explore this kind of subtle, pattern-based communication further in my design for NeuroRoutes.
The Sunflower scheme demonstrates how a symbol can:
Unlike other disabilities, dyslexia is not commonly associated with a universal visual symbol. Some existing suggestions (such as reversed letters, the infinity loop, or brain-related icons) tend to lean heavily on clichés or can feel medical and alienating. I want to move away from these toward a more abstract or emotional representation.
Symbols and patterns I could explore for dyslexia might draw on:
I also want to consider colour psychology. Pastel or muted tones, such as soft lilacs or greens, could offer clarity while standing out enough to serve a communicative function. I will need to test a few palettes for visibility and appeal.
