Print Publishing

The past decade has been challenging for traditional magazine publishers due to declining print readership.

However, a new generation of independent publishers is finding success by revitalizing print.

Danielle Pender, co-founder and editor of Riposte, an independent women's magazine, believes that people are looking for a way to "tune out" from being constantly online and connected, and that print can fill this need.

Riposte, launched in 2013, offers a diverse range of subjects, intelligent editorial, and stylish presentation, attracting an articulate and loyal audience.

The magazine's approach to navigation, visual design, and philosophy is innovative, with a focus on women's creative and intellectual merits.

The founders, Pender and Shaz Madani, deliberately chose a typographic cover and a unique pagination style to signal their intent and differentiate the magazine from mainstream women's titles.

Riposte has collaborated with brands like Nike and Fred Perry, and is now looking to build circulation, diversify distribution, and expand into new areas such as live talks and social events.

Despite financial pressures, the magazine has grown and is well-positioned to attract readers who value a fresh approach to content and design, and enjoy the printed magazine as an object of desire.

‘People want to tune out. That’s where print comes into its own. As being away from screens becomes more important, so, too, will the value of print.’
