Week 1 - Opening Lecture with Ben.
Who Is Ben?
Ben is here for support and for an extra pair of ears. He can help with the module, but he is mostly here to help with everything else: what to do after graduation, how to prepare your portfolio. Give him an email if there's something in particular you need.
What is this module about?
“What the brief in 740 does is set you up for your final project, 750. In this module, you have a brief separated into two parts: the module and the National Gallery London brief.”
Going through the module.
- You must move quickly.
- You must create an artefact/response.
- Be really clear on your GOAL.
- How do you see the world, and what interests you?
- What demographic might be most interested in your work?
- What is your research area? if you keep this too broad, you WILL spiral. You need one research question, something answerable.
- You are using design to come up with a solution; this is your project. So turn it into a research question that you can answer with design.
- What is my research area? I would like my area to be travel, culture and identity, as this is what I find interesting. This would be my chosen research area.
Research Area VS Research Question.
Research area - I’m interested in these broad areas.
Research question - zoom in on a very specific scenario. Think unique, think about a very small niche.
Methodologies
- When you're designing, try to think consciously about why you do the things you do while you do them.
- Reflect back, what did you do, and why did you do it?
